Abstract
Overview: Many studies have shown that blood uric acid levels increase in various cardiovascular diseases, including among stroke patients. Objectives: To determine the correlation between serum uric acid levels and some risk factors in patients with stroke due to hypertension aged over 40 years at Can Tho. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 56 stroke patients aged over 40 years due to hypertension. Plasma uric acid levels were quantified enzymatically in all patients. Results: Of the 56 acute stroke patients studied due to hypertension show the mean of age of the patinets was 69,38 ± 10,579. Grade 1 hypertension was highest rate 55,4%. Uric acid levels were significantly higher in men compared to women (p=0.049). The average serum uric acid concentration was 371,76 ± 126,209 µmol/L in men and 275,19 ± 105,167 µmol/L in women. For ischemic stroke, the average serum uric acid level was 325,51 ± 123,066 µmol/L, and for hemorrhagic stroke, it was 282,10 ± 166,888 µmol/L. The study also found positive correlations between uric acid levels and height, weight, body mass index (BMI), systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, triglycerid, creatinine (r= 0,343, r=0,463, r=0,324, r=0,372, r=0,331, r=0,437, r=0,292) and negative correlations with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) (r=-0,265). Conclusions Hyperuricemia is highly prevaent in patients with stroke over 40 years due to hypertension and is associated with height, weight, BMI, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, triglycerid, HDL-C and creatinine.
