Abstract
Hypertension and the aging process have garnered increasing attention, especially considering the rising prevalence of hypertension among the elderly population. Significant updates regarding diagnostic thresholds, treatment interventions, and management strategies for hypertension in the elderly have been outlined by the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) in 2023. For individuals aged 65-79 without isolated systolic hypertension, the treatment goal is to achieve blood pressure <140/80 mmHg, with isolated systolic hypertension targeted at maintaining systolic blood pressure between 140-150 mmHg. For those aged 80 and above, the treatment aim is to maintain blood pressure between 140-150 mmHg for systolic blood pressure and <80 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure, without lowering it below 120/70 mmHg. Patients of very older with systolic blood pressure <120 mmHg or severe frailty may consider reducing antihypertensive therapy.
