Abstract
This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and evaluate in-hospital treatment outcomes among 80 patients with definite infective endocarditis treated at the Cardiovascular Center, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, from May 2021 to May 2026. The median age was 54.5 years (IQR, 38-65), and 71.3% were men. Cardiac murmurs were detected in 93.8%, fever in 42.5%, and dyspnea in 32.5%. Blood cultures were positive in 52.5% of patients; streptococci accounted for 76.2% of positive cultures. Vegetations measuring at least 10 mm were observed in 57.5%, with the mitral valve being the most commonly affected site (66.3%). Surgery was performed in 53.8% of patients, and the mean hospital stay was 39.13 ± 21.57 days. At the end of hospitalization, 87.5% were discharged, 10.0% were transferred, 1.25% left against medical advice, and 1.25% died. Infective endocarditis had diverse clinical manifestations and was managed with both medical therapy and surgery; more than half of the patients underwent surgery, and overall in-hospital outcomes were favorable.
