Coenzyme Q10 and cardiovascular surgery

Published: September 28, 2026

Abstract

Cardiovascular surgery, particularly when involving cardiopulmonary bypass, is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation. We have reviewed the potential benefit of supplementation with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery, given the role of CoQ10 in promoting normal mitochondrial function, and as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.
