Abstract

The foramen ovale is a physiological structure in the fetal circulation that allows blood to pass from the right atrium to the left atrium, bypassing the pulmonary circulation. After birth, the foramen ovale usually closes within the first 1–2 years of life. However, in approximately 25% of the adult population, complete closure does not occur; this condition is referred to as a patent foramen ovale (PFO)
