Abstract

Overview: This study aims to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults aged 40 - 89 years with prehypertension in the community using the SCORE2 and SCORE2-OP scores. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional descriptive study with systematic random stratified sampling, representative of the Thua Thien Hue province's ecological regions, between 5/2023 and 5/2024. Results: There are 411 patients included in the study, the average age of the participants was 58.78 ± 11.18 years, 37.0% male. The estimated cardiovascular risk score, according to the SCORE2 and SCORE2-OP is 10%. Notably, there are 51.6% of participants with high cardiovascular risk, followed by moderated risk with 23.4% and 25.1% with low risk. Males exhibited a significantly higher high cardiovascular risk rate than females (p < 0.001). According to four eco-regions, there is no correlation between the eco-regions and the estimated cardiovascular risk by SCORE2. For cardiovascular risk factors other than the SCORE2 and SCORE2-OP, fasting blood glucose, total blood cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatinine, height, weight, waist circumference, heart rate, and diastolic blood pressure were strongly correlated to the estimated cardiovascular risk (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Individuals with prehypertension are still at risk for cardiovascular events at different levels that need a community-based screening and comprehensive strategy for primary prevention of cardiovascular events.
