Abstract

Overview: Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are two diseases that silently progress into serious complications. Hypertension includes true hypertension, white coat hypertension (WCH) or masked hypertension (MH). It will be dangerous for patients with type 2 diabetes in case of missed MH or misdiagnosed WCH. Methods: A cross-sectional study enrolled type 2 diabetic patients ≥ 18 years old who had not been under antihypertensive drugs or drugs with antihypertensive side effects at the Outpatient clinic of Ho Chi Minh City Nhân dân Gia Định's Hospital. Results: From August 2018 to December 2020, 323 patients were included in the study. The rate of WCH was 22.6%, the MH was 31.6%. Risk factors such as: elderly, female gender, family history of high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes, insufficient physical activity had a difference between WCH, MH and normotension. Conclusion: The rate of WCH and MH in patients with type 2 diabetes without antihypertensive drug treatment is relatively high. WCH, MH assocciate with risk factors such as: elderly, female gender, family history of high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes, insufficient physical activity.
