Acute pulmonary embolism: Prospects for the years beyond 2023

Abstract

Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a cardiovascular emergency that continues to pose a substantial clinical challenge because of its high rates of in-hospital mortality that do not appear to be declining with time. National and international guidelines for the diagnosis, management, and prevention of venous thromboembolism have been updated to reflect current practices, with a particular emphasis on PE. The management of PE is still challenging in spite of these developments. Promising directions for PE patient care are presented by recent scientific and technical advancements, especially the incorporation of artificial intelligence in risk assessment and early identification. Furthermore, the creation of new anticoagulants offers a safer substitute for current ones while preserving a similar level of therapeutic efficacy. Moreover, the growing significance of pulmonary artery intervention methods emphasizes the potential of reperfusion agents to supplement or even replace systemic thrombolysis. This change in treatment approaches represents a critical turning point in the care of acute pulmonary embolism.
